What is a normal day as a CCA?
When you first start the supervisors will have you come in later than the others, usually around 9:00 am.
Once you have some time on the job you will start the same time as the regular carriers.
Your reporting supervisor will have you case on 1 or more routes and prepare them to go out for delivery.
You may or may not deliver that route.
It is possible that you will be delivering different pieces of several routes.
Remember you are the flexible workforce and we are depending on you to deliver the mail.
In time you will become proficient, but meanwhile works towards proficiency.
There are 4 types of delivery and most likely you will experience them all, maybe in the same day.
Mounted- delivery to mailboxes on posts.
NDCBU- Apartment style boxes
Park and Loop- Bundles of mail sorted at the post office are delivered from one starting point odd/even addresses to the end of a loop on a street. Basically you are delivering up one side and crossing over to complete that section or bundle of mail.
Bicycle- You ride a bicycle to deliver to residents and businesses.
There will be times you will come back to the office and be asked to go assist another carrier or CCA.
Things to know about the job:
CCA’s work long hours and the job is very physical, hot and can be wet due to afternoon showers
This job is about organization
It is imperative to report to work every day. Employees who are not regular in attendance will be released from working at the USPS
CCA’s work Sundays and Holidays
Schedules are posted a week in advance
Saint Petersburg has 10 offices and you can be assigned at any office. You may work in more than one location in a day
We understand you do not care what location or position you get you just want to get in with the USPS. But it is not always easy to transfer and you must wait 90 days. Transfers are discretionary and you must initiate the transfer. So driving to the office you want to work at and talking to the supervisor there. They will request information as in attendance, performance, accident? Due to this if you are not coming to work they may not accept you, etc.
Driving a long ways for this position, even over the bridge will get tiresome. Especially if you are working until 7-8 at night and have to report back at 8:00am.
If you live far away you may want to hold out for a position closer to your home
You are able to continue to apply at other offices and postings while working as a CCA.
So what is next after I have accepted the job and completed my fingerprints?
Once you have completed your SF85, fingerprints and eNaci background check the roughly 41 day process begins.
When you have cleared the background check, Greensboro will create an EIN (Employee identification number) and process your Form 50.
An effective date will be available for local services and you will flow to L D&D to be scheduled for orientation.
You will receive an email from L D &D providing the upcoming orientation dates. If at that time you need to put in a 2 week notice email L D&D back and they will push your orientation out 2 weeks.
Orientation is 3 days and then you will go to your assigned office to complete a shadow day.
A shadow day is a day in the life of a city carrier. You will follow them around all day to see what we do at the post office.
You will then receive an email scheduling you for DDC (Drivers class) and after this training, carrier academy for 4 days.
It will take roughly 2 weeks to get through this part of the training.
But wait you’re not done yet!
You will report to your assigned office after carrier academy and complete 3 days of on the job training.
